Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which was formerly referred to as a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS, is required through section 13 of the Hazardous Products Act (HPA). The HPA places a legal requirement on any supplier of a Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (often referred to by its acronym WHMIS) controlled product that is intended for use in a work place to transmit a SDS, which discloses prescribed information, as a condition of sale. Furthermore, section 14 of the HPA requires a Canadian importer of a controlled product to obtain or prepare a SDS as a condition of importation.  Safety Data Sheet labelling and information are outlined in the Hazardous Product Regulation.
